Meet the team
With a background in Electronic Engineering, Gavin has more than 30 years of experience in the greater AV industry, working across all aspects of the design, supply, and integration chain in as many vertical markets. He was instrumental in establishing the South African Communications Industry Association (SACIA) in South Africa and holds an AVIXA membership.
Since starting Digital Fabric, he has focussed almost exclusively on museum and visitor attractions, gaining experience in all of the disciplines required to deliver turnkey projects. His journey has been diverse, from conducting filmed interviews around South Africa’s apartheid history to the creation of a Bond 007 attraction at 4600m in Austria to a lead role on the largest visiting country pavilion for Expo 2020 in Dubai. Gavin is currently focussed on the South African and the Middle Eastern markets.

With a background in Sound Engineering, Alex has spent much of the last 20 years working in the Live Events Industry and Pro-AV Integration Market. From early 2000 he was Technical Director and co-owner of a technical event company in Johannesburg, South Africa. During his 7-years there he helped establish it as leading supplier of large-scale Audio, Video, Event Structures and LED Screens to this market, also bringing advanced Show Control to this segment in South Africa for the first time. Shortly after that, Alex established Design 496, where he offered consulting, design, development, and production of bespoke solutions for the AV Rental, Pro-AV, and Museum markets, including Show Control and mechanical Show Automation.
With his passion for CNC, 3D CAD, and production know how he also offered 3D printing, Laser Scanning and Rapid Prototyping services to a niche military client base. Design 496 provided consulting and design services for large scale LED screens systems, event rental power solutions and specialised in large scale audio systems. The most noteworthy audio systems he worked on being the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban for the 2010 World Cup, which was one of the largest and most complex systems of its type at the time. Based on many years of collaboration, synergies, and friendship, in late 2010, Design 496 was merged with Digital Fabric with Alex taking the role as Technical Director alongside Gavin Olivier as Managing Director. In this role the last 5 years has seen Alex based abroad involved in Digital Fabric’s international business ventures, mostly in Themed Entertainment and Visitor Attractions globally.
