National and International site in Pretoria
Freedom Park is a national and international site in Pretoria, South Africa, that celebrates liberty, diversity, and human rights. The institution houses a museum and a memorial dedicated to honouring those who have contributed to South Africa’s liberation, and includes a memorial with a list of the names of those killed in the South African Wars, World War I, World War II as well as during the apartheid era. The site of Freedom Park was carefully chosen and is situated on a 52-hectare undeveloped hill overlooking the city of Pretoria. The museum’s aim is to preserve and honour the nation's heroes and the complex story of South Africa from the dawn of humanity, through colonialism, into post colonialism and post-Apartheid. Freedom Park is a memorial to honour those who sacrificed their lives to South Africa’s freedom.
Journey with the Freedom Park
Digital Fabric’s journey with the Freedom Park project spanned many years as the narrative journey was constructed by a diverse team of local and international designers, artists, writers, and architects. Architecturally, it stands alone as one of the most complex and striking museum buildings in the country. We were fortunate to play a role from the seed of an idea and were able to contribute throughout the entire project life cycle up to and including the public opening.
Audio-visual and interactive design
Digital Fabric’s scope included audio-visual and interactive design, lighting design, bespoke structural mounting systems, and the integration of all technical elements within the display cases and artworks. The nature of the exhibits lent themselves well to a highly theatrical lighting and AV approach and all display cases were outfitted with museum grade fibre optic lighting systems. Working with the project management team we oversaw all aspects of the implementation of this mammoth project over a period of two years.
